This S’Mores Dip Is a Major Upgrade to the Classic Treat

And I plan to make it all year round.

As kids, my brother and I craved s’mores every night—I mean, it’s summer’s best dessert after all. As a quick fix—since our parents wouldn’t build us a daily fire, understandably—we would stick a plate of s’mores in the microwave. But they never compared to the real thing. A microwave can’t turn marshmallows golden brown, and a s’more is nothing without its charred flavor.

I wish we would have known back then how easy it is to make this s’mores dip! By using an oven, we could have made a large amount of gooey deliciousness to dip endless graham crackers into.

Name a more perfect treat for a party or two hungry s'mores lovers that are too impatient to roast individual bites.

This Is the Best Way To Make S’Mores Dip

We tested various ways to bake the s’mores dip in the oven, including broiling it and moving the rack to different levels.

The best method is to set one rack in the upper third, and another in the lower third. Start the skillet on the lower rack—this will ensure the chocolate melts before the marshmallows get too toasty. Then move the skillet to the upper rack, and take it out once the marshmallows turn golden brown.

It will take 5 to 7 minutes on the lower rack and 2 to 3 minutes on the upper rack.

How To Roast the S’Mores Dip on an Open Fire

If the party isn’t at home, but outdoors, set the skillet 3 to 5 inches above the flames. Rotate it several times to make sure the chocolate chips and marshmallows melt and roast evenly.

If your fire pit is small, you’ll need to place the skillet closer to the flame. A large and very hot fire will burn the s’mores quickly, so place the skillet farther away. Overall, it should take 5 to 7 minutes to cook.

What To Dip Into S’mores Dip

The obvious answer is graham crackers for a signature s’mores flavor and crunch that’s hard to beat. Be a little extra with Trader Joe's Chocolatey Coated Chocolate Chip Cookie Dunkers, pretzels, or even sliced apples.

You can also drizzle Nutella or caramel on top, or sprinkle Oreo crumbles, crushed peppermint, coconut shavings, flaky salt, or any other fun garnishes you may have in your pantry.

What To Make With Your Leftover S’Mores Fixings

Total Time 13 mins

Yield 2 cups

Do not broil this s'mores dip. The chocolate will not melt before the marshmallows burn. Follow the baking instructions in step #3 for perfectly melted chocolate and golden brown marshmallows.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 2 cups mini marshmallows

  • Graham crackers, for dipping

Method

  1. Assemble the dip:

Evenly spread the chocolate chips in a 10-inch cast iron or oven-safe skillet. Top evenly with the marshmallows.

If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, a 9- to 10-inch baking dish will do the trick.

  2. Preheat oven to 450°F:

Position racks in the lower and upper thirds of the oven.

  3. Bake the dip:

Place the skillet on the lower rack and bake until the marshmallows soften and just start to turn a light golden brown, about 5 minutes.

Then, move the skillet to the top third of the oven and bake until the marshmallows are golden brown and toasty, about 2 to 3 minutes. Serve warm with graham crackers.
